Difference between Computer Arts: New Media and Graphic Design at Academy of Art University?
Q. I'm planning on going to the Academy of Art University in SF, but I'm stuck between whether I should take Computer Arts: New Media or Graphic Design. Could someone please tell me the difference? Also, if I do take Computer Arts:New Media, what type of career opportunities are there? I know obviously if I take Graphic Design, I become a Graphic Designer, am I right? Please help!

A. Hello! I'm a student at AAU and here's about as much as I know: New Media is part of the Computer Arts school, so you're going to learn more about web design and web graphics. You'll probably learn programs like Photoshop, Flash, After Effects Fireworks, Dreamweaver, etc. and probably some basic HTML, CSS, etc. Graphic Design is more traditional arts based, where you'll learn the principals of design and stuff like typology, calligraphy, print and package design. You can always change your major if you end up liking one more than the other. You can probably even float between the two and still be a graphic designer, but learn the tools of the new media trade.

Bachelor's in Digital Media Art -- what is it good for, and does it make good money?
Q. My university (San Jose State) offers a degree in this particular specialization. My question is, what kind of spectrum does it cover? What kind of work is involved? Does it make good money? How is the job market? I am considering doing this or 3D computer animation, but I am undecided as of yet. Please help.

A. I took a course in Digital Media in Sydney at a college called KVB: Institute of Technology. I really enjoyed it. There are HUGE opportunities for this that are only going to grow. Digital media is probably best described as moving graphic design. You're going to learn graphic design, but also animation, flash in particular. I think it's probably the best course to take because it gives you such a huge range. You learn how to design, but also how to make those designs move which gives you SO Much more opportunities. Look online, everything is going "flash" and it's good to know how. 3d animation is something I've always been interested but is more complex and more limiting. In digital media you could work for yourself and do freelance,… [cont.]
