Mixed media, in visual art, refers to an artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed. There is an important distinction between "mixed-media" artworks and "multimedia art". Mixed media tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a "mixed media" work - but not a work of "multimedia art." The term multimedia art implies a broader scope than mixed media, combining visual art with non-visual elements (such as recorded sound, for example) or with elements of the other arts (such as literature, drama, dance, motion graphics, music, or interactivity). When creating a painted or photographed work using mixed media it is important to choose the layers carefully and allow enough drying time between the layers to ensure the final work will have integrity. If many different media are used it is equally important to choose a sturdy foundation upon which the different layers are imposed. A phrase sometimes used in relationship to mixed media is, "Fat over lean." In other words: "don't start with oil paints. Plan to make them the final layer." Many interesting effects can be achieved by using mixed media. Often, found objects are used in conjunction with traditional artist media, such as paints and graphite, to express a meaning in the everyday life. In this manner, many different elements of art become more flexible than with traditional artist media. From Wikipedia under the

Also look at the terms and conditions of usage on the different download websites. Answered by mimarlou - Sun Mar 9 17:17:10 2008 What is the most popular style in art right now? Mixed media or ....? Q. From art history, I know classical oil painting, impression art, but right now I see lots of mixed media art works in galleries. Asked by kelvin l - Thu May 11 00:00:45 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Actually, mixed media is not a style. Mixed media is the material substance or media, like oil, acrylic, watercolor, metal, clay etc that the artist uses to create an artform like painting, sculpture, weaving, jewelry ceramics etc. Popular themes in art today often tend to be regional and if you could call Regionalism a style, then that term might work as a possibility to answer your question. Q. I have an art project for school that I'm currently working on, and I'm doing some research and deciding on what media I should use at the moment. I really enjoy painting, and photography. I want to mix both of them together to create an art work...but I'm not sure how. I was thinking I could do a collage, but I'm not so sure about that yet. Anyone have any ideas of how to mix acrylic or water colour painting and photography? I'm planning on doing a portrait, if that helps. Thanks. Asked by *** - Fri Jul 31 23:36:39 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Perhaps do the portrait in half photograph, have painting, collaging the elements of each of them together. In other words, take a great photo and print it out very large, the size of the finished piece. Then tear it up. Next, paint the portrait of the same person. Or if you want to be a bit cutting edge, make it the painting of a different person of the opposite sex who looks similar to the person in the photo. Cut that up, too. In the next stage, you collage the torn parts of each portrait to make a new person, or if using the same person, make it the collage of just that person. Do not trim the edges, or make the pieces fit well together. If you need more ideas contact me through my profile here at Yahoo! Answers.
