How is plaster of paris used in mixed media?
Q. I want to glue down a few slightly heavy objects for a mixed media piece. I am looking for the right thing to use for mosaics and also big objects that are not broken like a stone ware jug. I know how to use tile caulking but am interesting in something more stable to put around the objects and add texture . I have not seen anything much about making art with plaster of paris on the web.

How long can mixed media art pieces last? What type of glue would be good to use for long term stick?
Q. If I were to apply fabric, manila folder pieces, buttons, or wire what type of paint or glue should I use for maximum strength and durability? What are some problems that could arise?
Asked by mile179 - Sat Jul 5 21:59:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is hard to say how long they will last because the life span of all the different media you're using will vary. Your best bet is to use non-yellowing 2 part epoxy and let it dry thoroughly. Be super careful when using it or wear those tight latex gloves you can get at the drugstore then toss them afterward. I have heard that Gorilla Glue is good also but haven't used it. Obviously, lay the artwork on a flat surface when applying the mixed media to it. Good luck!! : P

How can I create a mixed media collage with watercolor and textured paper?
Q. I am interested in creating a watercolor collage. I have Bristol board and watercolor paper. Which is better? What do I use as an adhesive for the textured paper? and do I paint a glaze over the collage? or over the entire painting?

A. I would choose Bristol Board. Yes, I would also use a glaze over it after you finish. This is a protection and also it adds another dimension to your Collage. Good luck.

How can I incorporate photography into mixed media paintings?
Q. I have a photograph that I need to transfer onto a canvas by any means that would integrate it well - but I have no idea where to begin. Should it be on regular printer paper? Photo paper? Do I glue the image onto the canvas and cover it with something, or find a way to transfer the ink of the paper onto the canvas material...? I need all the suggestions and instructions I can get! Thankyou!!
Asked by SomePostGirl - Sun Jan 4 16:06:19 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can print your image onto inkjet paper and simply glue it on your canvas. Wait at least 24 hours before sealing the image. The other way would be to print your image on 'transfer' paper (available from your computer shop.) You can then place the printed image face down on your canvas and transfer the inks using a warm iron. Again wait 24 hours before sealing it. Experiment first as you may want to change the orientation of your image.

What can I seal mixed-media/collage pieces with that would not cause the work to smudge or smear?
Q. (acid-free) I had tried gel-medium and the results were less than desirable.

A. have you tried after sealing with the gel-medium rubbing on Dorland's wax? It's rather niffty . . . . Here is the blurb from Dick Blick's about Dorlands: Dorland's Wax Medium is a non-yellowing wax and resin mixture that strengthens oil paint film against shrinkage and cracking while sealing out dirt, air, and moisture. Dorland's improves the luminosity and clarity of colors. It adds translucency to oil paints, making them more brilliant. It can also be used as a final coat on dry paintings, metal sculpture, wood carvings, and antiques. Since it is made with pure beeswax, it is perhaps the most authentic final treatment for fine wooden furniture and woodwork, both antique and modern, Mix directly with the color before applying it… [cont.]

Is it possible to make a digital print over a mixed media canvas?
Q. I am looking into an original way to print out my digital art. I was wondering if it were possible to prepare a canvas using different papers glued to it as well as oil or acrylic paints, and then getting a printer to print the image on top of it, for example, a digital print of a girl on a paper and paint background. Has this been done before, and if not, would it be possible with the use of opaque inks or some other techniques?
Asked by Matthew - Tue May 19 15:27:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most printers have a curved paper path that would probably break all the glue bonds. You would need to use a manual feed tray on an inkjet printer that has a straight paper path. Pigment-based inks should probably show up on acrylic. Most printers use dye-based inks. The HP Vivera inks are pigment, as well as any that claim to be extra-vibrant. If you have a "transparencies" setting on your printer settings, use that - it will allow extra drying time during the print. Paper thickness might also be a problem. Some printers have an "envelope" setting that is designed for extra-thick paper.

What is the best printer to use in doing mixed media art?
Q. And what kind of ink is best to use where it will not run when painting, glueing, etc.?
Asked by Karina A - Tue Jul 22 14:09:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you dont need photo quality then a good color laser will do fine. Printing will be fast and per page cost low. Since the toner is baked on to the paper, it shouldn't run. However, for real photo quality you need an Epson inkjet. Epson's ink is supposed to last for 100 years and not run. However the ink is expensive. You can get cheap compatibles at and they work well for me, but I have never tested whether the ink will run if you paint or glue on it.

when doing mixed media work, how can i make shiny collage images from magazines matt to match the rest?
Q. i want these shiny magazine images to blend in with the water soluble oil pastels, paints, crayons and pencils and pens etc. which create a matt effect. i live a small town in north india with very limited art supplies and so do not have access to modern acrylic gel mediums etc.

A. Test a piece that you're not going to use, or another page, by putting it in warm water for at least 8 hours then dry it in the sun. You can test more hours or less, to see what will satisfy you. Then you can do it with your piece.

The Abstract Expressionist ,Jasper Johns and Robert Raushenberg The sculpture of Joseph Cornell still intrigues me. Sculptors,George Segel Ed Kienholz. Starting out with traditional mediums but then and becoming aware of mixed media was truly a breathe of fresh air for me. It completely reinvigorated whatever interest I already had in art. Opening up what seemed to me to be endless possibilities and opportunities to be creative. My sculpture is primarily but not exclusively in mixed media to this day some twenty plus years later. To say it's be fun and exciting is an understatement..

A. I have done a few mixed-media pieces, but wouldn't say I'm experienced. When I do illustrations sometimes I used watercolor over a sketch and once the watercolors are dried I go over with Prismacolor pencils to add detail and depth, you could also do this with charcoal. You can also do Watercolor and then when the watercolor is dry go over with acrylic. Simple things like that. Not sure if I helped, but I tried. ;) -Kate AIM: Leftofnowhere

A. You could use a hole punch or a needle to make holes in the corners of your transparency, then fasten it to the canvas with metal brads. A little washer or bead can be a spacer. You can find all that stuff in the scrapbooking section of your local craft store. .

Mixed media painting with ink?
Q. I just started painting last year and I still always use just watercolor or just acrylic, I never mix anything. I saw some mixed media paintings and wanted to do watercolor or acrylic (or both) with ink...But I don't really know what they mean by ink. What is it and where can I buy it? And what are pens? What is the difference between pen and ink? Because I saw someone have a mixed media with pen and ink and I don't know how that is really mixed...they sound the same.

A. Pen and ink is the use of a dip pen or small brush with Indian Ink to create line and/or shadow before a colouring, as it is water proof. Other inks are the coloured type which are water soluble and can mix. Here is a good example of mix medias of (coloured) ink, acrylic and watercolour: Mixed media means using a different media for different jobs.

A. mixed media offers texture and depth that often can't be gained from one media such as paint or pencil. It's often used in abstract art especially with found items such as book pages and trash as these have more meaning to them. If you look at some mixed media artists, their work is very visually interesting and has many dimensions. one of my favourites is robert rauschenberg. check out www.artchive.com for some artists
