From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments that are bound with a medium of drying oil — especially in early modern Europe, linseed oil. Often an oil such as linseed was boiled with a resin such as pine resin or even frankincense; these were called 'varnishes' and were prized for their body and gloss. Other oils occasionally used include poppyseed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. These oils confer various properties to the oil paint, such as less yellowing or different drying times. Certain differences are also visible in the sheen of the paints depending on the oil. Painters often use different oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments and effects desired. The paints themselves also develop a particular feel depending on the medium. Although oil paint was first used in western Afghanistan sometime between the fifth and ninth centuries, it did not gain popularity until the 15th century. Its practice may have migrated westward during the Middle Ages. Oil paint eventually became the principal medium used for creating artworks as its advantages became widely known. The transition began with Early Netherlandish painting in northern Europe, and by the height of the Renaissance oil painting techniques had almost completely replaced tempera paints in the majority of Europe. Q. I have some oil and acrylic paintings on canvas that I would like to ship to India from US to my sister. The canvas sizes are 24"x24" (inches) and 30"x30". So they are substantially big. I am afraid that the cost to ship them as is might be a lot and they may be damaged in handling. Someone suggested I take the canvas out from the frame and roll it up and then just send it. But I am afraid if I take the staples out to separate the canvas stapled onto the frame, it may damage the canvas cloth and the painting. Any experience with this? How do people ship paintings internationally? Asked by racp - Mon Aug 27 16:35:49 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have shipped paintings all over the world and shipped one back to Texas that size from France. What I did was build a wooden crate. The shipping was with a freight company and I took it to their warehouse near the airport in Toulouse. The freight company had a similar warehouse in Houston at the air port and delivered the art. It was around$100 not including the box. I needed to have paperwork saying how much the art was and that the artist was alive as France has a different program for artwork of dead artists) So check out what kind of bill of sale you will need for customs or if a factor is involved. I found out later that the airport could have recommended several companies that offer this freighting service so I can't tell you if I… [cont.] Answered by nguyen thi phuong thao - Mon Aug 27 18:00:53 2007 How do I go about getting an oil painting of me?
Q. Me and my family are interested in getting paintings/portraits done of us. Like big ones done in that old 17th century oil painting style. Are there people who specialize in this? Where can I find them? How long would it take to finish one and how much would it cost? We would want one that's very big (like lifesize). Please post. Thanks.
