Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface (support base). The application of the medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush but other objects may be used. In art the term describes both the act and the result which is called a painting. Paintings may have for their support such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, clay or concrete. Paintings may be decorated with gold leaf, and some modern paintings incorporate other materials including sand, clay, and scraps of paper.

Painting is a mode of expression and the forms are numerous. Drawing, composition or abstraction and other aesthetics may serve to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner. Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in a still life or landscape painting), photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolism, emotion or be political in nature.

A portion of the history of painting in both Eastern and Western art is dominated by spiritual motifs and ideas; examples of this kind of painting range from artwork depicting mythological figures on pottery to Biblical scenes rendered on the interior walls and ceiling of The Sistine Chapel, to scenes from the life of Buddha or other scenes of eastern religious origin.

What type of paint would be the best to use for someone transitioning from drawing to painting?
Q. I love to draw/sketch. I wanna start using paints but the few I have tried have really not worked for me. I've tried water color and acrylics. On the one hand sometimes I feel the need for a thicker paint but then feel my painting could benefit by water color. I also am not sure what types of paints go with which canvases. HELP!

A. I had the same dilemma, to me oil painting is an easier transition than watercolor and acrylic. Acrylic seems to dry to fast if you're use to working with dry media which you are able to take your time with and alter the colors later on. Oil paint allows you to be more flexible when painting; it is easier for you to go back and change something while its still wet. Unfortunately, oil paint takes FOREVER to dry, but if you're patient i think its worth the wait. In my opinion, you should try acrylic after you get use to oil painting, which shouldn't take that long. As for the types of paint, I like water soluble (or water mixable) oil paint. It's the easiest to work with, because you don't have to deal with using turpentine which is toxic… [cont.]

When painting how do you avoid it being sticky afterward?
Q. I'd like to spray-paint a piece of furniture, but I've had problems in the past with painting. I tried painting an end table once, and also some shelves, and both times the paint dried sort of sticky. Even months after it was painted it was still sticky. I'm not sure if it's because I live in a humid area (Houston) or if I'm just using cheap paint. But does anyone know how to avoid the sticky feel after painting?

A. First of all, did you prime the piece, or just paint it? If you didn't prime, then whatever finish was on the piece will be interacting directly with the paint, which can cause stickiness. Priming the piece creates a barrier between the old finish and the new one, preventing that interaction. There are some paints which have primer in them or which double as primer, look at the label before you buy to find one. Second, try to pick days that aren't as humid (hard, I know!) and use a fan on the piece while it's drying. Use a good quality paint, not the super-cheap stuff, and that should take care of it. I've had pretty good results with Krylon. As far as getting rid of the sticky feel on the ones you've already painted, your best bet… [cont.]
