Sculpture is three-dimensional artwork created by shaping or combining hard materials, typically stone such as marble, metal, glass, or wood, or plastic materials such as clay, textiles, polymers and softer metals. The term has been extended to works including sound, text and light.

Found objects may be presented as sculptures. Materials may be worked by removal such as carving; or they may be assembled such as by welding , hardened such as by firing, or molded or cast. Surface decoration such as paint may be applied. Sculpture has been described as one of the plastic arts because it can involve the use of materials that can be moulded or modulated.

Sculpture is an important form of public art. A collection of sculpture in a garden setting may be referred to as a sculpture garden.

What do you learn and do in a sculpture class?
Q. I know that you essentially learn how to sculpt, but I'm looking for a little more information. If you've ever taken a sculpture class, what was it like? Be as descriptive as possible. I'm asking because I'm taking an Intro to Sculpting class next semester.

A. in intro, you will probably be introduced to the primary techniques, such as subtractive (like carving away), additive (like adding more clay or wax together), assemblage (putting objects together), casting, in the round, and relief sculpture. you will probably be given info about various tools and materials as well.

What would be the opposite of a relief sculpture?
Q. I made a sculpture in my 3D design class, and on the base I carved inward instead of having a relief with a flat background. What would the technique I used be called?

A. Depends on what you carved away. Sunken relief or intaglio - same reference as the other answer - involves carving the image - figures, etc, - down from a surface. But shallow relief, if you think about it, almost always involves cutting the background down, leaving the image standing - marble and granite are negative sculpting materials - you can't add to them. Now it looks different if you leave a frame of uncut material and do a design that enhances the idea you are looking into the stone - like this - and one that works hard to make it appear that the image is emerging from the stone like most of these

What is the difference between freestanding sculpture and relief sculpture?
Q. Are there different kinds of relief sculpture?

A. Relief scuplture is dimensioned images in a wall or flat surface amd can only be viewed from the front. Freestanding are fully 3 dimensional and can be viewed from all sides.
